Martin Audio Powers Immersive Transformation at Sydney’s Plaza Hotel

AUSTRALIA: Sydney’s iconic Plaza Hotel has undergone a remarkable transformation, elevating it to a premier global entertainment destination. Originally opened in 1930 as a movie theatre, the venue has seen numerous evolutions over the years. Now, under the stewardship of the Winchester Hotel Group and with creative direction from Sarah and Ryan Maloney, the Plaza has been meticulously revitalised, boasting six distinct entertainment areas, including a fully restored classic 1930s theatre.

Among the most notable enhancements is the creation of Level One, a nightclub conceptualised by Ryan Maloney with inspiration from Ibiza’s world-renowned nightlife scene. Designed to deliver a top-tier audio-visual experience that would appeal to globally recognised DJs and performers, the sound installation was entrusted to Brendon Fava of Xcite Audio Visual.

To meet the brief for a premium sound system that would align with international rider specifications, Martin Audio was chosen as the brand of choice, with the installation executed in close collaboration with the manufacturer’s Australian distributor, Technical Audio Group (TAG).

TAG’s technical director, Anthony Russo, sought to create an immersive sound experience that would fully envelop the dancefloor. This led to the deployment of a six-stack configuration featuring 24 units of the Martin Audio WPL line array elements in six hangs, providing a true 360° soundscape. “People rarely experience a high-powered, concert-style cabinet that operates well within its limits, while maintaining significant headroom,” says Russo. “This is crucial for efficiently handling the massive dynamic range produced by international DJs.”

Complementing the arrays, a six-stack configuration of 18 units of the Martin Audio SXH218 (2x18in) hybrid subwoofers was implemented. Standing at an impressive 2.5 metres, the main sub stack allows patrons to feel the full force of the system when dancing next to it. However, as Brendon Fava notes, the installation is about more than just sheer power. “It’s about delivering precision, power and consistency. It’s designed to hit hard, sound clean and perform flawlessly all night.”

Beyond the main dancefloor, the venue’s bar and VIP booth delay areas are served by 16 units of the Martin Audio THS 15-inch 3-way coaxial cabinets, ensuring a seamless transition of audio coverage. The DJ booth itself features what Russo describes as “the Martin SRM System, a Super Reference Monitors 4-way DJ system,” comprising a pair of THS cabinets mounted on custom-made brackets and two SX218 subwoofers. “A three-way coaxial means the DJ receives the extreme detail and timing needed for a perfect performance,” Russo explains. “The clarity and power of this setup will undoubtedly become a rider requirement.”

To maintain sonic consistency throughout the venue, the foyer is equipped with 11 units of the Martin Audio Blackline X8 loudspeakers supplemented by three SX112 subwoofers. Additionally, stringent measures have been implemented to control vibrations and minimise disturbances to neighbouring properties. Each speaker cabinet is either suspended using Embelton spring isolation or mounted on specialised floor mounts, while CVAV Sydney designed and installed custom rigging solutions to further mitigate unwanted vibrations.

The venue’s audio infrastructure is powered by an Allen & Heath system processor, which drives 14 units of the Martin Audio iKON DSP multichannel amplifiers on a Dante network, delivering an impressive 250kW of available power.

Meanwhile, at the Basement level, Sarah Maloney has curated a stunning subterranean vinyl bar, offering a moody, intimate atmosphere. Here, an immersive six-position sound system has been installed, consisting of 6 units of the Martin Audio CDD15 speakers, 8 units of the CDD10 for fill, and 2 units of the SX218 subwoofers. DJs performing in this space benefit from a powerful stereo monitoring system featuring CDD15 loudspeakers.

Since reopening just before Christmas, the Plaza Hotel has quickly re-established itself as a landmark nightlife venue. Hosting top-tier local and international DJs—including Chris Stussy and Mind Against—the venue has also garnered a loyal following among VIPs, celebrities, and discerning partygoers, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination on Sydney’s entertainment scene.
